If somehow you don't know about Mistakay, you will do after his new EP settles. The Doncaster producer has been backing up the grime scene for several years now with his hard hitting and one of a kind instrumentals any MC would be blessed to spit over.
His track entitled 'Frontline' was arguably the breakthrough for him now, accumulating just under 200,000 streams on YouTube, as London emcee Drifter came through and dropped flames on an already hot beat.
Now, Mistakay is very much riding in his own lane and is looking to further his sound to the masses, starting with this release.
The opening riddim is suitably titled '2006' like it has been stored on his hard drive and dusted off for airplay today. The piping sound breaks through the dark bass making up a very decent introduction to what the rest of the EP has to offer. 6/10 here.
Next up we see a more modern edged track in 'Rubix Cube'. The electronic synths start off the beat until we hear that famous 'Mistakay on production' before the thumping bass kicks in. I'm not sure many MC's could handle the tempo of this one and even though it's still 140bpm, you would need some sharp bars to pierce through this production. 9/10 may seem generous, but this is definitely the standout track, don't @ me.
'Trilogy' is the third track and it comes with an oriental vibe we hear from time to time from grime producers. However, and it's a big however, the vibe on this one is very energetic and it still makes you want to jump up along with the trap styled high hats. I'd give this one a firm 7/10.
'Spookz' is a more laid back track and giving us a more mysterious side to his best making, Mistakay lays down a cold offering nonetheless. I'm also giving this a 7, better than a tape filler, not a standout though...
The final track see's a more garage vibe come to the forefront on 'Tapedecks'. Everyone who loves grime loves a garage anthem from time to time and I think this one can be a real party starter for DJ's out there! I'll give this one an 8, purely for the fact I'd be skanking to this one in no time.
Overall a solid body of work that will leave you wanting more after each play. If you love instrumentals, getting your ears around this is a no brainer.
