As many grime fans will know, Birmingham very much carried the scene through the darkest time of the genre where a lot of MC's withdrew from the underground.
Those 2010-2013 times are a distant memory as the genre is making bigger waves than ever before, without the intervention of big labels. Everyone is independent and is paying homage to the original sound we all once knew and loved and bringing their modern edge to it.
One emcee who's doing exactly that is Birmingham's very own Mayday. Despite the slight remission in the Midlands, Mayday is firmly flying the flag for the 0121 with his brand new project RAINWORLDKING.
In his short documentary, the young MC expressed his views on how personal the project is to him and how, on so many levels, listeners can relate to his emotions and devotional lyrics in abundance. Everone has an escape and 'Rain World' is the metaphor of Mayday getting away from everyday struggles when the rain pours.
The six-track tape is introduced by 'Dusk', produced by Misogi - a track that exhibits his horror-like relationship and the following heartbreak that is protruded with the dark themed shooting of the video.
Next up Mayday fires his potent bars after a double gun-shot on 'Mansa Musa'. A nostalgic sound is very evident on this one, which is certainly a banger in its own right.
For the third track, the Birmingham MC spits over the trap-infused beat of 'Moniker' and tones his flow down to address the touching subjects of entering the game and trying to make his city proud.
The halfway point sees Mayday bring through an oriental vibe on 'Grove To The Mountain'. His relentless energy can be felt here, which inevitably tells another heart-felt story of how far he's come already and the traveling he's done to find himself.
The penultimate track is the hard-hitting 'Lead My Team'. This was the first single and it's fair to say it raised the bar for what was to come. Mayday compliments the wavy MistaKay production and comes through with skippy flows any MC would be proud of.
Finally, we hear 'Forever Nomad'. A perfect track to sum up what the EP is all about - the journey of the last four years of his life and the challenges he's come up against.
Overall, this latest offering not only allows Mayday to engrave his name further into the Birmingham grime scene, but it's raised the bar and will no doubt open endless doors for him in the near future. The eloquent storytelling unified with a variety of productions make this a timeless body of work.
