Lewisham MC Yizzy is hoping to break down the barriers that have surrounded grime in recent weeks as the UK Rap and Drill scenes looked to have moved further to the forefront. Afrobeaters are also appearing in abundance and Grime is slightly beginning to lose its footing in this current climate.
However, there are MC’s keeping the pulse alive and kicking and one of those is 18-year-old Yizzy. Over a year of shelling down radio sets, live shows and tracks, not only is the young MC firmly flying the flag for the new generation, but he’s also reigniting the scene with his ferocious flows and potent bars which are reminiscent of how grime originated at pirate radio stations.
His new EP S.O.S (Save Our Sound) is a project representing exactly that. The raw energy and inviting dark and fiery sound will no doubt be evident on this EP and it will certainly be one that takes the ‘true to grime’ throne when it drops on May 4th.
That description of staying true to 140bpm is apparent in his new video for Bap, which has just been premiered on Notion Mag (below). Yizzy fuses the old-school sound with his refreshing barring and renowned skippy flow which he delivers on a tower block in South London.
I witnessed this energy and his vigorous presence on the mic first hand at Grime Originals and although I was already a fan of what he was bringing to the table, you can see why many are calling him Grime’s new hope.
Following Novelist’s debut, this project is due to be another game changer and could be a more important one for grime than many were originally expecting. Look out for S.O.S on May 4th.
