Inspiration comes to us in many forms, MC's are inspired to make music on a daily basis. But, this time it's not just London calling, a new era of grime is upon us and the man known as Coco is at the forefront of an emerging scene. Coco, who is native to the steel city is too busy stealing our ears at the moment, with his fast paced flows and cold beats, this man is showcasing talent at its highest level.
Coco is enjoying the biggest pop of his career, with his new EP ' No Rehearsal' out on May 25th. The EP is made up of five tracks, and trust me when I say that you'll find yourself hypnotized by all of them. The Sheffield MC has even added some of his own production for the EP. I'm not one to talk about a predecessor for the grime scene, but when the passing of the torch does come, then, Coco would be my guy to take British Grime music to an even higher level, he has all the ingredients an artist needs to succeed.
'Tellin' Em' premiered last night on DJ Target's show on 1xtra, and it was that prolific Coco sound that we've come so accustomed to. If the 'No Rehearsal' EP has sounds like this, then I can't wait for this Friday. The video has just dropped for 'Tellin Em' and it's just as good as the song itself.
Big up to Coco and the team, read below for our exclusive interview with him.
Greetings Coco. So, what inspired you to become a grime artist?
A group of friends inspired me initially then I started listening to the likes of Skepta, Kano, Wiley etc.
Where do you see yourself and the grime scene in 10 years’ time?
Hopefully, I see myself as someone who the youth can look up to and aspire to be like. Still making music, producing and providing bangers. As for the Grime scene bigger and better!
Any new generation artists you’d like to work with, in the future?
There is a lot of rising talent at the moment, too much to mention tbh, but if the vibes right and someone catches my ear then deffo.
I remember being in my living room listening to Big N Serious and just thinking that this guy has something that’s going to change the scene. Was Big N Serious a game changer for you?
In certain areas it was yes, a lot of people recognize Coco for songs such as Big n Serious which is good to know.
Ingredients is a song I play daily, I could be in the kitchen or on the bus. But what’s your favourite song you’ve made and why?
My favourite song might actually be Ingredients! Ha! I’m a big fan of the energy alongside the flows of myself and Scrufizzer.
What was it like working with Scrufizzer?
Scrus my guy, when I first met him I felt like we’d known each other for a while. He’s got a kind of yardy work ethic and they way he goes in the booth and just shots lyrics.
I love the story of how you got working with Toddla T and Danny Weed, how much do you think they helped you?
I’d be lying if I said Toddla hasn’t played a big part in my recent musical success. He taught me lot and I’m forever grateful for that.
Any special skills we need to know about Coco? Other than music what else does man do?
Pretty much just music tbh, I used to like football but since music came into my life that's all its ever been
Gimme the mic has a real good feel about it, can we expect more like this?
Yeah alot more, I’m keen to keep experimenting with my production but 100% more Grime
You’re doing Sheffield proud Coco, does it make you happy?
Of course that's my stomping ground, I’m a product of Sheffield, without Sheffield I wouldn’t be who I am today and it's always good to give back to them
It’s nearly festival season, got any coming up?
Yeah I’ve got a few festivals and overseas bookings so I’m just looking forward to travelling again and meeting new people.
What’s your favourite snack and why?
My favourite snack might be a bag of crisps, sounds boring right lol. Can never go wrong with a bag of crisps. Beef & Onion to be precise.
No Rehearsal is available for pre-order, I think it’s gonna be big, how are you feeling about it?
That's right, pre on iTunes and Gimme The Mic is available everywhere. I’m excited, I’ve been sitting on this music for a sec so I’m just happy it's almost go time. Looking forward to everyone's reaction as well!
I see you’ve got an event with Steel Banglez coming up. Is that someone you’d like to work with, in the future?
Steel Banglez is the man right now and I’d be lying if I said no. I love his production.
This Friday was going to see Coco drop 'No Rehearsal.' I'm talking about five tracks with five-star ratings, it's a given, considering how Coco is tearing up the UK grime scene right now.
