Woiiii! This one is a vibe! Dark, greazy and a whole wave, for real.
With his debut solo riddim for Potent Funk, veteran MC, Cobes (of group ‘London Zoo’, alongside Sumgii, Pierre Green, DJ Frost, Rocko and Dabbla), has come with a testament, and a shot on target, to the ‘high life’ and the music scene, backed by Potent Funk’s in house producer, Don Piper on the buttons, and Alénee Aisha, model and circus performer, on visuals.
The track itself is an absolute banger in its simplicity. Don Piper has laced the track with a strong string synth melody (which has been described as Middle Eastern in its influence), a heavy, 808 sounding kick (with what sounds like a glide on it), accompanied by a simultaneous snare and symbol pattern, a deep sub bass, and both male and female synth accents, and ad-libs throughout. Barely there and able to hold the whole show, all at once. Outstanding.
Cobes comes in dark with it, with his fully practiced and patterned, low, low flows (having been a rapper from early in the Drum and Bass scene), making the shit look easy. Opening the track spitting about never having much on the come up, Cobes shares he’s coming for it all, still, he’s got that polished skill, not like these new dons, and his drive to win is right where it needs to be; ‘Might have thought we was dead, we just sleeping, now we back creeping/Now there ain’t nowhere to run, so hide if you want, but man’s peaking’. Oooof.
Later, Cobes shares he has as much passion for enjoying the rave as he does heading it up, as he takes us on a circular journey through all the raves, girls, draws, and drinks that he’s burned through, time and time again, spitting the hook ‘It’s raw, so much fun it must be against the law/I ain’t quitting, i’ma do this shit some more.....Deja vu, is where I seen this shit before/Deja Vu is where I seen this shit before’. He raps about boredom being his main motivation for living it up, and details a typical night for himself; going for a drink with the crew, bagging gyal in the club, taking her home, and bouncing out again in the morning, only to want to do it all over again the next day.
Alénee occupies a dusky pink bedroom throughout the video, bringing a heavy hedonistic vibe, and Cobes is seen spitting in the bedroom with her, as well as a variety of grimy locations throughout the track. The video has a dark, rich palette, and the movements of both Alénee and Cobes are slow and subtle, following the tone of the track and the bars, perfectly.
A journey into the hedonistic side of the rap game, a statement of declaration to come for more of it, still, and a f**king vibe! Cop it, cop it now!
