Oi though, this one is the vibe, still! Dream Mclean and IAmNewMachine have created something special here for ‘Durag Beckham’.
Dream Mclean has garnered a fair amount of industry attention, from people like Annie Mac, Charlie Sloth and MistaJam, and has worked with the likes of Chase & Status, Professor Green and CASisDEAD in the past, which already showcases a certain level of talent before you go any further, but jheeeeze this riddim solidifies it.
The riddim comes in with a certain speakeasy quality, utilising what sounds like an old style melodic sample, on loop, and a light drum pattern, with everything slightly muted and scratchy, then as the tune starts proper, the quality clears, and we get a heavy 808 kick/light snare pattern, with the same melodic loop playing (only occasionally accented with a shift in loop at the end of 8 bars), and Dream muted in the background. When Dream comes in proper, we get some skippy rolling hihats accenting the flows, and occasionally the melody drops out altogether. The whole riddim is also backed by vibey ad-libs.
Dream Mclean weaves a lazy flow through the beat, with clever wordplay, spitting about wasting some of his youth and come up on partying, and road; ‘me against the world, i’mma get another 2 packs/tell me where the food’s at’, and the hook ‘Drink your fucking Henny up, used to play penny up the wall, not a penny up....what have you done, where d’you get that?/What are you on, lemme get some’. Wavey as.
Mclean also shares that he’s sharpening up his game, and wanting to be shown real love sooner, for doing up music; ‘Love, they don’t show enough, I ain’t got a show book, I’m just showing up/It’s fucked when you think you’re coming up, tough one to swallow, you’re throwing up, nah’, rather than later; ‘if I hit the cemetery, England gonna miss me like a penalty’.
He later spits that he wasn’t focused enough before, but is now; ‘Truesay I was on a missing thing, Now I’m on a mission thing’ and immediately proves his point with the following bar ‘Listen, listen boy, Van Nistlerooy/Yeah this one’s rude, Van Nistlerooy’. Ooooof! Mclean goes on to show that he’s getting his shit straight, to go legit ‘All my old bits as well, listen, I’m tryna be legit as well/Earned too big for scales and Manna too....come on, come on’.
About 2/3 of the way through the track, the riddim is pared back to just the melody and drums again, and we get a mini interlude where the hook is being spat in a lazier, muted way, but then someone coughs in the background and Mclean can be heard saying ‘Listen Bruv, coughing? On the fucking tune?’, and can be heard laughing hard, making you laugh yourself. After, the riddim comes back stronger again, for a slightly different hook, including 2 2 last bars about his early days; ‘Drink your fucking Henny up/Used to play penny up the wall not a penny up/Used to bump 2 trains and a bendy bus, just to get the session bud/Fire, fire, fire in my heart before I knew what I’m ready was/she can ask anyone...’.
This riddim’s the fucking one, bruv! Been bumping since first play...Drink your f*cking Henny up! Watch the video in full below:
